German 'Venus' may be oldest yet

A grotesque carving in mammoth ivory is arguably the world's oldest depiction of a human figure, scientists say.
The distorted sculpture, which portrays a woman with huge breasts, big buttocks and exaggerated genitals, is thought to be at least 35,000 years old.
The 6cm-tall figurine, reported in the journal Nature, is the latest find to come from Hohle Fels Cave in Germany.... read more

I think it's a shame that words like "grotesque" are used to describe what looks like an incredibly piece of artistry
PS Morgaine Lomasach lives in Schwabia - I wonder if she has heard anything about this.

The New York version was a bit more favorable, except for them quoting a historian that describes the figure as bordering on pornography.
Then again, there were no printing presses 35,000 years ago, so who knows? ; )
What amazes me is that this is so similar to figures found in Australia, which is very distant from Germany...

She is beautiful! Fanny is also amazing (up till now she was the oldest depiction of a human, a mere 27000 years old, she is in the Vienna Natural History Museum) |
